today i woke up and i was thinking hey u know what would be good: logging into tumblr and giving my total unsolicited take on badhai do. so, anon, you ask and i shall deliver :3

first of all LAVENDER MARRIAGE!! let's be honest every single one of us living in traditional homes with well-meaning but oblivious parents at some point entertained the idea. I know I did. I still am , and im still in college! The part I liked most was how they handled the theme. Comedic in the right moments and seriously handling sensitive topics in others. Now, I am a person who loves romcoms. LIVES for them in fact. That was why i absolutely lost my shit when SMZS released. Both movies actually do a really good job of keeping their comedic bits to topics we as desi queers can relate to. Somehow, it's not stepping over anyone for laughs, nor is it disrespecting our community for the sake of clout.

I still remember mainstream bollywood dipping their toes into lgbtq movies with Kapoor & Sons and Laxmi (I'm talking lgbtq movies where they are the main point of interest), which were handled honest to God TERRIBLY. I won't spoil it for you guys, but let me say the only thing they did a "great job" at was villianizing us right of the bat. Getting rep like that is like...hey might as well not get any rep at all, you know? Which was why this new surge of lgbtq movies with PROPER and SENSITIVE representation, whether well-meant or not (i mean it's bollywood, come on), is still something to celebrate.

LET'S TALK THE ACTORS! Casting is essential to any movie; and what's more important, especially in bollywood, is reputation. There have been many, and i mean MANY, cases where actors (ESPECIALLY rising actors with zero clout and nepotistic ties) will not take the job despite the high pay, simply because the thematic elements of the movie are too controversial. However, we see time and time again these actors taking on the challenge and controversy, so of course they have to be appreciated.

I'm sure you guys caught on at this point but the faces of our representation in present bollywood media boil down to three mains: Ayushman Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, and Rajkumar Rao. Rao was in Ek Ladki Ko and Bhumi was in SMZS in the first scene! Ayushman Khurrana has always been known to take on comedic and untraditional roles. I became attracted to his acting after watching Dum Laga Ke Haisha (co-starring Bhumi ;) ), which handled double standards and fatphobia quite well imo. He was also amazing in another movie called Badhaai Ho (ik quite on the nose there) that discussed pregnancy in elder women. This guy has got some SERIOUS good acting skills, and I mean it, but he also willingly takes on untraditional roles (effimenate, bald, sex worker, etc) AND PORTRAYS THEM PROPERLY. Also fell in love with Bhumi in Dum Laga ke Haisha, and she does amazing in roles ranging from "the scorned woman" to "best friend to a queer couple and being absolutely supportive" to, you guessed it, "south asian lesbian rep in an interracial relationship". Rajkumar Rao is a surprising addition to this list because his first movies had him as the "traditional main lead falling for pretty women". Quite a shift to "gay man in a lavender marriage". Ek Ladki Ko was him dipping his toes into queer media, so watching him dive head first into such a risky endeavor left me in awe. All in all, the best part about him is his constant growth. He has always been a good actor, but watching his transformation into a great one is absolutely phenomenal.

I do not know if any of these actors are actually part of the lgbtq community themselves, and I will not speculate. The mere fact that they are willing to put themselves in the line of fire in a country and community still coming to terms with it's history and identity is something i will always be deeply and profoundly grateful for.

You and I, anon, are two birds of feather. I am closeted too, and most likely will be for the rest of my life. But it's these movies and actors that give us a chance to open up a conversation. Just the other day my mother watched SMZS, ALONE AND WITHOUT ME KNOWING (I gatekept the movie like crazy from her). She ended up hating it, which is understandable she is, after all, a deeply religious Muslim woman, but she still sat and watched the whole thing simply because we both love Ayushman Khurrana. I know she will find Badhaai Do and sit through it because we both love Bhumi as well. It's these moments, anon, that I reflect on and appreciate the most. One day, when we are both old and weary, I will say to her "remember that gay movie you watched and didn't like, well I am like them mom". I do not know what her answer will be, but at least I know I will have a chance to hear it, all thanks to movies and actors like them.

Upcoming Bollywood Movies 2020

2019 has been an impressive year for Bollywood in terms of box office numbers and content. It was great to see content movies like Bala, Super 30, and The Sky Is Pink were well received by the audience. As 2020 approaches, fans are clearly excited to see the new year. So before we enter the new year and the new decade, we decided to compile a list of upcoming Bollywood movies for 2020. Check it out.

Note: The release date shown below for the movie is tentative and may be subject to change later in the year.

1. Bhangra Paa Le

Director: Sneha Turani

Cast: Sunny Koshal, Naela Grewal, Mark Pennington and Shriya Pelgaonkar

Release date: January 3, 2020

An upcoming Bollywood movie shows a rivalry between two people played by Sunny Koshal and Nila Grewal. Along with the drive to beat the competition, the determination to prove their affiliation with the big stage pushes them to their limits.

2. Sat Kushal Mangal

Director: Karan Vishwanath Kashyap

Cast: Akshay Khanna, Priyank Sharma and Riva Kishan

Release date: January 3, 2020

Sab Kushal Mangal is a love triangle with a humorous twist. Newcomer Brian Sharma plays Pappu Mishra in the movie and hosts reality show Musibat Odh Li Maine. Politician Baba Bhandari (Akshay Khanna) ends up kidnapping him. Throughout the entire drama, the two end up falling in love with the same girl.

3. Tanhaji: The Forgotten Warrior

Director: Umm Reut

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol

Release date: January 10, 2020

In addition to bringing Ajay Devgn and Kajol's partner back to the big screen, Tanhaji: tells the story of Tanaji Malusare, who was the military commander of King Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In the upcoming Bollywood movie, we see Tanhaji compete head-to-head with Uday Bhan (Saif Ali Khan) with the goal of protecting South India from the invasion of the Mughals.

4. Chhapaak

Director: Meghna Gulzar

Cast: Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey

Release date: January 10, 2020

In Chhapaak, Deepika plays the character Malti inspired by acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal. Vikrant is seen as a financier, social activist and Deepika's interest in the movie. This upcoming Bollywood movie aims to show how such an act has dire consequences for the victim's life.

5. Jay Mummy Dee

Director: Navgot Gulati

Cast: Sunny Singh, Sonali Sejal, Poonam Dhillon and Supriya Patak

Release date: January 17, 2020

Marriage is not only a union of two people, but also between two families. Therefore, it is possible at times to expect some misunderstanding between the two of you. In the movie, we see mothers of a boy and a girl getting into a war of words. This upcoming Bollywood movie is a hilarious romantic comedy.

6. Any cache as they are

Director: Vishal Mishra

Cast: Vivan Shah, Priya Singh, and Sofia Singh

Release date: January 17, 2020

Ae Kash Ke Hum is the story of three close friends, their love and destiny. Bari (Priya Singh) falls in love with classmate Aysush (Vivan Shah). But when he admits his feelings, it is too late. However, fate brings him back to her life, but this time things are completely different.

7. Street Dancer 3

Director: Remo de Souza

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Nora Fathy and Prabhu Deva

Release date: January 24, 2020

Street Dancer is the story of two dance groups from India and Pakistan, led by Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor respectively. As they begin to do their best to look at each other and their countries, they realize that dancing is much more than their little rivalry. Teams of Archers then come together to represent their community as a whole.

8. Banga

Director: Ashwini Ayer Tiwari

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Gacy Gill, Richa Chadha, Nina Gupta and Pankaj Tripathi

Release date: January 24, 2020

Sanjay Gupta loves gang wars and is now ready to add another to the list. The next Bollywood movie takes us back to the 1980s and 1990s, when factories of shopping malls and high-rise buildings were closed.

9. Challang

Director: Hansal Mehta

Cast: Rajkumar Rao, Nashrat Behrucha, and Mehmet Zeeshan Ayub

Release date: January 31, 2020

Chhalaang brings back the successful mix between Rajkummar Rao and Hansal Mehta on the big screen. The movie is said to be a social comedy based on a small town in Uttar Pradesh.

2019 year in review

Top 5 films (did i even watch 5 movies last year??)

1. shutter island (i had been meaning to watch this one for years and finally did, god.. such a brilliant movie. definitely a fav)

how to train your dragon 3 (httyd franchise coming to an end??? biggest rip but also cute asf i could rewatch all 3 over and over without getting bored)

spider-man: far from home (a spider-man movie with jake gyllenhaal??? excuse fuckign me of course this is on the list he looked gorgeous w his hair and beard. fuck me jacob.)

ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga (a lesbian bollywood movie?? in my brown house hold??? thank fucking GOD. cried a lot at the end, still think about it till today and not to mention how much i love sonam kapoor and rajkumar rao)

el camino (GOD... the hurt i felt watching this and looking at jesse... man how i missed him. the pain was caused mostly by me remembering the kid in the yellow oversized hoodie who smiled and laughed and then seeing the traumatised man he’d become. just.. breaking bad sequel done right.)

Top 5 TV-shows (literally the only shows i actually ended up watching this year

peaky blinders (i started a while back, life happened then watched the whole thing again this year w the sis. fuckin wow, i cannot. i miss u john)

fleabag (if you havent watched fleabag???? sis wyd, STOP what you're doing and watch it now. this will probably go down as one of my favourite shows, humour, cynicism, love??)

derry girls (teenagers being allowed to be teenagers for once ffs, not giving us model looking supposed 16 year olds?? thank god. also giving glimpses of how the conflicts of that time affected their lives. just nice)

that 70s show (the episode names really just .. i couldnt stop. season 8 doesnt exist pls and thank u.)

the haunting of hill house (a horror show thats actually good?? it exists?? yes it does. and plus they let me stare at kate, carla, michiel and oliver for 10 episodes.)

Top 5 songs (can u believe only FIVE SONGS??? this shouldve been 5 albums but i’ll concede)

mission - catfish and the bottlemen, the balance (ugh that beginning??? van u kill meee, “im sure you know what you’re doing now, if there’s a wall son, knock it down” & “you know i’ve shown you the ropes enough to know that almost dont count for nothing now, so go ahead make the missus proud” then the beat?? ugh i listen to this on repeat and just die;)

2all - catfish and the bottlemen, the balance (hits HARD and in the best way. all of the balance is just so dear to me i can’t imagine this year without it and will definitely be sad not to have new music from the boys until they decide to bless us. “i gave my love to all, all the ones that stuck around” which is also a quote i’ve stuck on my laptop.)

social cues - cage the elephant, social cues (i’ll just say it now, but cage the elephant kills me,, and matt’s voice is just always good to me. so when the album came out ofc i cried. “hide me in the back room, tell me when it’s over. dont know if i can play this part much longer” the way this bit is.. with the change in beat and matt’s singing just thank you. black madonna from the album is another fav)

wars - of monsters and men, fever dream (of monsters and men came out with a new album;........ WHEN I SAY I DIED --I REALLY DID. their music always has been transcendental to me so this one did what was promised. “love you on the weekends, but im careless and im wicked,” just... neato i cannot)

vulture, vulture - of monsters and men, fever dream (favourite song on the album, has been on repeat all fucking year. “i dont know about these heavy hands..” god the line, the way it’s sung just hits me)

the glass menagerie - tennessee williams (hit me too hard and too close, the whole thing and the ending absolutely wrecked me ,,, tom wtf)

a storm of swords - george r.r. martin (everything about these two parts were just damn, i needED THAT. damn u george)

salt to the sea - ruta sepetys (oh god, i read this in a day whilst listening to handkerchief thief WHILST there was a storm, i got so immersed into it it was fuckin insane. ending is amazing and still sits inside me. the writing is beautiful i could reread this one over and over.)

the magic of reality - richard dawkins (dawkins is just.. explanation of everything in the best way possible for a fellow agnostic/atheist)

the fall of house usher - edgar allan poe (do i really have to elaborate? short story that leaves u unsettled)

5 positive or happy things that happened this year!

came out to my best friends (who were both supportive as hell)

finished school! (good fucking riddance, cannot think of the last 2 years without getting nauseous)

got closer to a few friends that always manage to make me laugh stupidly (one of which is one of the few people actually staying in the country with me for their studies and has noted that i am now stuck with them for the years to come)

met some incredible people through tumblr (yknow who you babes are)

wrote for someone other than myself and got to practice something i love so dearly (thank you allll so much for allowing me to do so and enjoying something so dear to me)
